Cambridge is an ideal staycation destination, with so much to do, eat and see, it might even feel like a long weekend just isn’t enough.
However, if you’re limited to just a weekend, we’ve shared our ultimate itinerary, so that you can experience the best Cambridge has to offer, and go back feeling like you’ve truly embraced Cambridge life.
Here’s how we recommend you spend a long weekend in Cambridge.
Friday Night
Dinner & Drinks at The Varsity
Kick off your long weekend in style at The Six bar and restaurant at The Varsity Hotel.
The exquisite menu, cocktails and stunning view of Cambridge provides the perfect way to wind down, relax and celebrate the start of your long weekend.
To ensure that you get the best of this experience, ensure to book your table in the evening so that you can watch the sunset on the rooftops of Cambridge.
As The Varsity is a fine-dining destination, this will also give you the opportunity to don on your glad rags and dress up for the occasion.
Saturday
Breakfast at Fitzbillies
It would not be a visit to Cambridge if it did not include a meal at the famous Fitzbillies.
In particular, we recommend booking a table for breakfast, as their menu will cater to any tastebuds and dietary requirements and not disappoint. There are few places in Cambridge that can cater so well to such a variety of dietary needs, so whether you’re vegan or gluten-free this is the perfect place for you.
You may also want to take away with you one of their famous Fitzbillie’s Chelsea buns. Just in case you need a snack later on.
Punting along the River Cam
Once breakfast is complete, it’s time to do what all good tourists must do in Cambridge – Punt!
Punting along the River Cam is a must if you’re looking for the ultimate Cambridge experience, and you can choose how you wish to enjoy this experience.
If you’re feeling brave, you can hire a punt and try it for yourself. Although trust us, it’s much harder than it looks.
And if you’re feeling the need for some privacy and relaxation, you can book a private punt tour and have the incredible Cambridge punters tell you all about the history of Cambridge and the college buildings.
To the Market for Lunch
Right in the heart of Cambridge, you will find the Cambridge market. A vibrant market that provides everything from unique items to a range of delicacies.
To get the full Cambridge experience, we recommend visiting the market for lunch, as there are some incredible authentic dishes from Cambridge’s diverse communities.
Gather as many delicious dishes as you can manage and find a spot to tuck in and people watch.
Museum
Cambridge has several museums which offer an insight into the areas history and the prestigious people who once called the city home.
It’s hard to pick a favourite out of all the museums available, but for the ultimate Cambridge experience, we would have to choose The Fitzwilliam Museum and The Museum of Zoology at Cambridge University.
Both will leave you in awe, and give your prime spots for Instagram worthy photos.
Read our blog on the six must-visit museums in Cambridge to help you make a decision on which you would like to visit.
Dinner at The Ivy
To finish off your Saturday evening in style, we recommend booking a full three-course dinner at The Ivy.
The Ivy has only been in Cambridge for a few years now, but it’s fast gaining a reputation for its fine-dining, exquisite food, tentative customer service, and luxury setting.
Without a doubt, this is a special place where you’ll be able to enjoy fine food while chatting all about your adventures from the day.
Again, if you enjoy dressing up for dinner, then this is the perfect excuse to get out that favourite dress or suit.
Sunday
Botanic Gardens
For a more relaxed pace to your Sunday a visit to the Cambridge University Botanic Gardens will help you unwind and enjoy the moment.
You can even take a picnic for your trip if you’d like to take your time and embrace the stunning surroundings.
With 16-hectares of garden you can quite easily spend a good few hours here, and if the weather is behaving it is even more of a must-visit.
Afternoon Tea at The Tamburlaine Hotel
As Cambridge is a quintessentially British city staycation, you can’t feel like you’ve truly had a UK holiday without including a proper Afternoon tea.
For the best Afternoon Tea in Cambridge book into the Garden Room at The Tamburlaine Hotel. As well as an exquisite spread of tea and cake, all beautifully crafted; the room itself is a stunning interior masterpiece and has been featured in The Telegraph and Homes & Gardens.
We hope our Cambridge weekend itinerary helps to inspire your stay, and should you have any questions about the places we’ve featured, or how to book, please contact our team who will be happy to help.
